Every hiring manager or employer knows that the key to a successful business is the efficiency of its employees. To streamline the process of hiring new employees, the use of an employment application template makes things easier for the recruitment team. As an applicant, it’s important for you to familiarize yourself with this document as it helps you to fill it up properly when required.

Employment Application Templates

What is an employment application template?

Simply stated, an application for employment is a document that the employers use to scan the information on forms that applicants submit. This form contains important information about the prospects and opportunities of getting jobs that you can use when you’re searching for job opportunities.

What should I put for additional information on a job application?

Aside from providing the usual information to an employer in an employment application template, it helps to include additional information about yourself that doesn’t involve your job and education history. Here are a couple of options:

  • Computer Skills
Because of its importance in today’s world, indicate in your basic employment application your computer competence. But if it isn’t too obvious, you might want to enumerate your computer skills separately. Most jobs today require some basic computer knowledge and skills. As such, it’s important to inform the hiring manager about your skills.
  • Technical Skills
There are positions that require certain skills common to a specific industry. If you possess such skills, you might get priority, especially if you have documents to prove it.
  • Associations
It’s also a good idea to include associations you’re affiliated with, especially if these are standards in the company. Membership in associations indicates your seriousness in your career pursuits and that you’re educated about the most recent standards and trends relevant to your interests.
  • Miscellaneous Information
This can include awards, recognitions, civic activities, cultural skills or volunteer work. You should mention other activities or interests that demonstrate your character, leadership or other relevant qualities.

What should I put for desired salary on job application?

The most recommended way to answer the salary expectations or desired salary space in an employment application template is to either leave it blank or input “Negotiable” instead of entering a value.

If the application won’t accept non-numerical text, you can simply enter “000” or “999.” Later, leave a comment in the notes section of the form. Explain that you entered an invalid number and you would like to negotiate your salary during the interview.

Providing a number that’s too high might put off the reader. You have to put your best foot forward first by impressing the employer with your interview skills and maybe then you can request the desired salary.

On the other hand, giving a number that’s too low might prevent you from negotiating later. Keep in mind that when filling up a form as part of your employment application, you still know nothing about the job. So, you need to go through the interview first.

How long does it take to hear back from a job application?

Usually, it would take between 2 to 3 weeks before you get feedback after sending your work application. If the job position is high-priority, the employer might respond faster or if the company you’re applying in, is an efficient or small organization.

On many occasions, it might take a longer time for an employer to reply. It can even take longer, maybe 3 to 4 weeks before the applicant receives a response with good news. This might happen in the following situations:

  • If an employer is too busy with other goals or objectives in their company.
  • If an employer is in the process of planning a new budget for hiring.
  • If an employer has a couple of key employees on leave or vacation, and they don’t have the time to interview applicants.

But these situations aren’t particularly common. On average, between 2 to 3 weeks is the time allotment for a response. After this time period elapses, you can assume that the company won’t call anymore. As such, you can start applying for other positions in other companies.

How to follow up on a job application?

It could take time for an employer to give a response to the employment application template you sent. One way to find out if you’re considered for the job is to follow-up on your application. When following up, here are some suggestions to consider so that you don’t sound too pushy:

  • Consider the timing
Don’t follow-up just a couple of days after filling up and submitting your job application template. Wait for about 2 or 3 weeks. That is unless the job posting specifically states a closing window for the application, in which case, you should set a target date for a follow-up.
As a general rule, the waiting period before a follow-up is between 2 to 3 weeks. During this time, the hiring team should already have enough time to review the applications that they received.
  • Be as professional as possible
Don’t commit the mistake of being overly casual or personal when following up. Remember that most hiring managers show friendliness as part of their job. But this doesn’t mean that they want to become friends with every applicant they interview.
Therefore, even if you had an excellent preliminary interaction, always remain professional. Respect professional boundaries when you follow-up on your applications.
  • If you plan to send an email, make sure it’s professional
If you want to reach out through email, make sure that you send your email to the hiring manager directly when following-up. At times, the email address gets posted on the original job listing. If it isn’t, research to find the right email.
  • Be very brief too
Before following up on your application, it is a good idea to know exactly what you plan to say first. Moreover, try to be as brief as possible in your inquiry, whether you choose to call, compose an email, or send a message on any social media platform like LinkedIn.
  • Call the company to follow-up
After 2 or 3 weeks and you still haven’t received any feedback on your application, it will be perfectly acceptable to reach out to the hiring manager by giving them a call. That is unless the listing says otherwise. You may need a new strategy if someone else answers the phone or if you need to leave a voicemail.
